I’ve discovered Unwoman thanks to Aaron Sikes, who mentioned her on Twitter.
It’s true that dieselpunk is a visual genre above all. Most of it is created by comics, illustrations and films. One of the reasons why Unwoman caught my attention is her video’s visuals. I like the atmosphere she creates, that undoubtedly reto feeling, that fantastical texture. Some of her videos are so sophisticated. I like Intertwined a lot too.
But of course, I like her music too, especially when the voice of the cello is most obvious, because that gives such an unusual, haunting sound to her songs. It add to much to the retro feeling.
What do you think? Did you already know her?
Unwoman is a cellist-singer-songwriter featured at steampunk conventions and other major events all over the US, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2013 she received the Steampunk Chronicle Reader’s Choice Award for Best Solo Musician. She has produced and published nine full albums. Unwoman has also collaborated with Abney Park, Amanda Palmer, Rasputina, Voltaire, Stripmall Architecture, and many other acts. In 2014 she announced a new dark noisepop collaboration with Matt Fanale (Caustic) called Beauty Queen Autopsy, who have a full-length debut coming Spring of 2015.

I really liked that! I hadn’t heard of her, the only name you mention that I know is Amanda Palmer whom I have seen in Glasgow (at the students’ union – I felt like a granny!) Some serious corsetry in some of those outfits though – I did worry about her. Obviously I HAVE turned into my granny……

When I saw the video, before I pressed play, I was amazed by how tiny her waist is, now that is some serious corsetry!
I really like it – the music and the video. I’m going to check out more of her stuff, thank you for the recommendation! 🙂 I’m quite a big Amanda Palmer so if they collaborated together I’ll no doubt like her stuff!

I browsed through her video on youtube and I really enjoyed them, especially the lestast one, that sound the most like this one. Older ones sound more… ‘metallic’, which I don’t mind, but I like the style above better 🙂

WOW! Amazing video and music. What a voice! And I agree, she really manages to set up the atmosphere. This is the perfect kind of music to have when writing…

I can never have any kind of music when I write, but I love to listen to music before I write, and yes, this is very inspiring 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it.

On the A-Z Road Trip and I saw your mention in Wee White Hoose. I’m sorry I missed your posts during the challenge since I am doing a biography of my grandmother’s family which includes that time period.
The music is new to me. Enjoyed the video!
