The Sea Phantom by Sarah Zama is a spellbinding story of loss and rebirth. It is the story of a young girl who has a longing for the sea and its songs. She is given a wonderful gift but betrays the gifter. As she grows, she realizes she has been living a life that was not her own. She is forced to confront herself and return to who she really is.
One mark of a great story is that it stays with you and keeps you thinking and revisiting it even after you are finished reading. This is such a story! I find myself thinking about it days later. I know that after a sufficient period of time, I will reread it and grow some more.
I most highly recommend The Sea Phantom by Sarah Zama.

This book was sent to me as an Advance Reader Copy against an honest and fair review.
It was my first attempt at a novel from Sarah Zama. Although not a real fan of short novels, I have been caught from the beginning by this story as well as the atmosphere of the book, a bit like with an adventure or Thriller film where you start feeling something is going to happen… When the story started to unfurl it proved very difficult to let the book go…
It is definitely a book worth reading, the fates of Chiara, or is it Emma and Ondina give a very special favor this novel which keeps its mystery until the end.
The fact that the author succeeded creating a catching, believable story and an enticing novel in such a short time of reading is really to be praised.

Il racconto di Sarah Zama si apre su uno scenario “terribilmente” realistico, la cronaca di un fatto di sangue ispirato a un preciso periodo della nostra storia. I dettagli dell’orrore visti con gli occhi della protagonista sembrano girati in piano sequenza, ben descritti al punto da farci immaginare perfettamente anche odori e suoni. Poi l’attenzione passa si personaggi, una coppia che da subito si intuisce aver poco, in fin dei conti, da condividere. E dalla Storia si passa pian piano alle “storie”, chi sono i personaggi, da dove vengono, domandandoci dove stanno andando. La bomba esplosa all’inizio del racconto non ha fatto saltare per aria solo un teatro, ma le certezze della protagonista. E dalle “storie” così si va oltre: l’autrice ci apre la porta sul passato della giovane cantante e in questo passato irrompe l’elemento fantastico, che nulla toglie però alla concretezza della vicenda. Una piccola incursione nel mondo del mito che ci mostra la protagonista sotto una nuova luce: che è alla fine la vera vittima? Le simpatie del lettore si spostano ulteriormente, passando sul nuovo personaggio che, in realtà, si scopre essere stato sempre in scena, come un fantasma.

A mix of fantasy and paranormal with world war II terrorist action and related horrific consequences, the story is very well written and masterfully related by the author. The lead character appears to be in a daze following a traumatic experience and previous experiences that come crashing down on her.

Very interesting. a little strange. The flashbacks were confusing at first. I wanted dingbats to separate them, but after the first one the name changes let them stand out. This is listed as a Little Mermaid story, but the intriguing thing is that it isn’t really about the mermaid.
